I don’t know about you, but when I first starting hearing the chatter about yoni steaming, I was like, excuse me…waat? I remember rolling my eyes and thinking “REALLY Gwenyth? Do I really need another ridiculous self-care item to add to my to-do list? VAGINA STEAMING? Good. God.”
It wasn’t until a few years later when I was struggling with horrible period cramps that I decided I would be willing to do just about anything, including giving v-steaming a try. It turns out, the answer was yes. Yes, I do need this seemingly ridiculous ritual as part of my self-care routine.
But before we get into that, let’s go over a few things. Why would anyone steam their vagina, anyway? What are the benefits? Is it uncomfortable? How do you even do it? I’m going to cover everything you’ve ever wanted to know ( or not wanted to know, in some cases) about v-steaming, aka yoni steaming.
What Are The Benefits Of Yoni Steaming?
Yoni steaming has been around for thousands of years and is respected by healers throughout the world. It’s only recently started to gain popularity in the Western world, with women willing and eager to try old-school remedies in the name of reproductive health. So what are the benefits of yoni steaming?
They aren’t limited to just improving period discomfort, but that’s certainly the reason that many women turn to yoni steaming in the first place. Besides period cramps, vagina steams are known to help with uterine fibroids, cysts, infertility, irregular periods, hemorrhoids, bloating, menopause and yeast infections.
If you’re like the majority of American women that struggle with any of those issues, and you’re thinking you might want to give yoni steaming a try, you may be wondering how to do it. It’s actually a lot simpler than you probably think.
How To Do A Yoni Steam
First, you just need to find a large basin or bowl that’s comfortable enough to sit on for 10-20 minutes. Next, add your yoni steaming herb blend of choice to the bowl and top with a few cups of boiling water. While the mixture is steeping and cooling slightly, undress from the waist down and wrap yourself in a blanket.
Once the mixture is cool enough that so that it’s still lightly steaming, but not hot enough to burn your delicate tissue, you can take a seat on the bowl of the yoni steam mixture and relax for 10-20 minutes. You might be nervous about this part, but honestly, it’s surprisingly relaxing.
After the herbs are done working their magic, you can put on some comfortable clothes and relax. I prefer to do the steam at night so that I can climb into bed soon afterward when I’m nice and relaxed. It really is a zen experience.
So why do I keep doing them, besides the relaxation factor? I’ve had several uterine polyps that have gone away on their own (I’m convinced with the help of the yoni steaming) and my normally unbearable cramps have definitely improved since doing v-steams.
What GLAMOUR Magazine Has To Say
Obviously, I’m a little biased, since I created this Secret Garden Organic Yoni Steam for Apothecary Co. but GLAMOUR Magazine seems to agree that Gwenyth was right all along.
“It seemed to lift my spirits in a way I can’t quite explain, but which may be attributed to the aromatherapy effect of the steam. I followed up with a bath and found it to be a beautiful addition to my Sunday-night self-care routine. I’m really sorry I made fun of you for all these years, Gwyneth.”
How Do Yoni Steams Actually Work?
So how do yoni steams actually work? Well, put simply, the steam is an efficient vehicle for the healing properties of the herbs and the oils within those herbs. It allows them to be easily absorbed into the skin and ultimately, into the uterus.
If you really think about it, it’s not unlike getting a facial with the goal of driving vitamin C (or any number of treatments) directly into the skin, for faster results. And in all honesty, that’s kind of what a yoni steam feels like, a relaxing facial…for your vagina.
Put Your Doubts Aside, You Might Be Surprised
I get that many people are doubtful that yoni steams actually do anything. So many women that have tried it, including me, and have been surprised at the somewhat unbelievable results. When I really think about it though, I wonder, should we really be all that surprised?
Women have relied on yoni steaming for thousands of years. Just because it’s not something that we can pick up at our local pharmacy (yet) doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. I would definitely encourage you to give it a try if you haven’t yet. You just might find out that you’re pleasantly surprised too!
