If you’re a little confused and wondering, what the heck is a face balm? Don’t worry, I’m simplifying it for you today. Face balms can be deceiving, because they go by so many different names; solid oil, overnight mask, and even cleansing balm.

But, in case you’re not already a superfan, let me break it down for you. Basically, they’re made primarily with a blend of oils and then emulsified with either waxes or different kinds of butter (like shea butter) to create a solid balm. That solid texture then turns into an oil once it hits the warmth of your skin.

5 Clean Beauty Balms

How To Use Beauty Balm

Now before we get into some of my fave beauty balms, let me walk you through the many ways that you can actually use them! Here are just a few of the ways that you can use beauty balms:

  • to soothe and treat rashes or razor burn
  • as a daily (or nightly) face oil treatment
  • as an intensely moisturizing nightly face mask
  • to help soothe painful sunburns or bug bites
  • as a moisturizer to help smooth fine lines on the neck and décolleté
  • in place of hair pomade to smooth hair flyaways
  • as an intense cuticle and hand moisturizer
  • as an overnight foot mask treatment
  • on your wrists or temples as an aromatherapy ritual treatment

The unique texture is what makes beauty balms such a great multi-tasking product. In the same way that you can use facial oil for exactly one million different uses, beauty balms are the perfect multi-tasking product. Now, let’s get down to the top 5 beauty balms that every girl should own!

The Perfect Multitasker

8 Faces Boundless Solid Oil $88

This solid oil is a mixture of shea butter, cocoa butter and a blend of several different organic oils and botanicals. The hero ingredient in this product is alma berry, which is rich in vitamin C.

I personally love the texture of this balm and the fact that it’s 100% organic. It smells amazing and delivers just the right amount of hydration over an extended period of time.

Leahlani Bless Beauty Balm $54

It’s rare to find a beauty balm that doesn’t contain wax or other emulsifiers. One that just gets straight to all the yummy, nourishing goodness. Leahlani’s Bless Beauty Balm truly is a luxurious clean beauty product that does just that and with a great price tag.

If you’re just starting out with beauty balms, this is definitely the one that I would recommend you trying first. With a heavenly combination of neroli and blue tansy essential oils and seven nourishing facial oils, this concentrated balm is one lovely way to start your morning (or night!)

MOA The Green Balm $18

This organic, multi-purpose healing balm contains yarrow to heal and repair, and tea tree, a natural antiseptic. It can be used in all of the traditional ways that I’m going to outline for you below. But, because of it’s powerful antiseptic properties, this is also a great balm to have on hand for some unexpected uses, like soothing bug bites, soothing minor rashes, and even for stretch marks.

Apothecary Co. Goddess Balm $49

Although this can be used in a myriad of ways, my very favorite way to use this particular balm is as a pre-cleanser. It removes layers of makeup and grime (including eye makeup.) After rubbing the balm into my skin to break up the makeup, I love to use the corresponding microfiber cleansing cloth with warm water to wipe it all away.

After that, I like to follow up with my regular facial cleanser to rinse everything cleanly away. I love that it’s rich in vitamin C and that I just need a pea-sized amount to moisturize my entire face as an overnight mask during the super dry Colorado winters.

Maya Chia Supercritical Chia Waterless Wonder Balm $42

Maya Chia Supercritical Waterless Wonder Balm

The name kind of says it all with this one, doesn’t it? This orange blossom scented balm is rich, long-lasting and perfect, not only as a facial moisturizer but for cracked hands and elbows as well. I love to slather it onto my face at bedtime and use whatever is leftover on my hands to coat my rough little elbows. It’s wonderful to wake up with plump, totally smooth skin.

Out of all the balms that I’ve tried, I especially love the way this one smells. Best of all, I can be confident that the smells are from actual essential oils and not hormone-disrupting chemicals!
