But first, have you ever used a facial oil, or do you prefer to use a moisturizer? Well, my friend, I’m here to tell you that facial oil is FAR superior to moisturizer #IMO. Is that in my opinion or should there be a humble in there? #IMHO? Anyway, there’s a catch to this face oil business.

Why You’re Using Facial Oil Totally Wrong and How To Fix It

It’s only better than moisturizer if you’re using it correctly, and chances are, you aren’t! So today, I’m going to break it all down for you and give you one super simple trick for how to use facial oil correctly!

The Big Misunderstanding

Let’s start with the facts. First of all, I didn’t realize that we are currently involved in a misunderstanding of epic proportions. You see, I was in the middle of hosting a Beautycounter party the other day and was raving about how much I LOVE facial oil.

I was expecting the rest of the girls at the party to start raving right along with me about how much they love facial oil too, and how they couldn’t wait to try it, and guess what I heard instead? Crickets.

How Can This Be True?

“Wait, nobody else here likes facial oil!?” It was true. I was in shock. How could this be?! Facial oil is my holy grail product. It’s my moisturizer, my eye cream, my lotion, my cuticle oil, and sometimes, even my shaving cream! Could there really be people in the world that not only weren’t using it, but that HATED it?!

The Aha Moment

It wasn’t until we started chatting a little bit more that I realized the one (huge) problem we were dealing with – nobody was using it correctly! In fact, they were all making one huge mistake.

Everyone who had tried using facial oil in the past, felt that it would just sit on top of their skin all day, and their skin felt totally, understandably, icky. Immediately, I knew why.

“You guys put it on right after you wash your face, right? Before your moisturizer?” Wrong again, my friends. “OMG, that’s why you all hate facial oil, you’re putting it on top of your moisturizer!!”

Why Can’t I Put It Over Top Of Moisturizer?

You see, as we all know, oil and water don’t mix. And sadly, most moisturizers are made up of mostly water, rather than the more expensive ingredients like high-quality oil, essential oils, or other active ingredients. (Just another reason why I looove facial oil.)

So, if you wash your face and then follow up with a moisturizer, any oil that you just put on over top of that moisturizer simply can’t sink in and it never will. The oil can’t get past the water barrier and therefore it’s just going to sit on top of your skin all day. And feel totally icky! NO WONDER all of these women were hating on face oil.

Houston, We Have a Solution

The good news is, we have a solution! Facial oil will reign supreme, after all! And guess what? It’s super simple. Are you ready? Just put the face oil on first! So simple, but so important.

If using moisturizer is your thing, or if you have super dry skin, you can still follow up with a moisturizer over top of the oil. This will actually lock the oil deep within your skin. But otherwise, just wash your face (you can exfoliate after that if you want to) and then follow up with the facial oil.

Facial oil makes an amazing makeup primer too. It’s one of my favorite ways to use it. If you put it on during your morning routine, your makeup will just glide on. Trust me on this guys, you have to give it a try!

And if you’ve already given facial oil a try, but you’ve never put it on in this order, you have to give it another try! I pinky promise that you’ll end up loving facial oil too!
